IRRIGATION WATER QUALITY FOR AGRICULTURAL HYDROGEL

Irrigation water quality: the invisible foundation of your hydrogel’s success
An agricultural hydrogel can perform only as well as the water it absorbs. Discover why irrigation water quality affects AQUASOL AGRO’s behavior and what precautions to take before applying it.
When considering the effectiveness of an agricultural hydrogel, attention usually focuses on the product itself: its absorption capacity, durability, and compatibility with the soil. However, there is a determining factor that is often overlooked: the quality of the water used to irrigate the crop.
AQUASOL AGRO is designed to work with water suitable for agricultural irrigation. This is not a minor detail, but an essential requirement for the hydrogel to perform its water-retention function properly.
It is essential to understand that the hydrogel absorbs and retains the water present in the soil, and may interact with certain substances dissolved in it. Under no circumstances should it be considered a water filtration, treatment, or decontamination system.
Why water composition affects the hydrogel
A superabsorbent polymer works through an ionic equilibrium with its surrounding environment. When irrigation water contains dissolved substances in high or abnormal concentrations, those substances can interact with the hydrogel and alter both its behavior and absorption capacity.
This means that the hydrogel itself can be affected by water quality, just like the soil or crop. Therefore, ensuring suitable irrigation water is not merely a general agronomic concern, but a direct requirement for the product to function properly.
Water requiring special attention
Not all water sources available for irrigation offer the same assurances. Certain types of water require prior testing before being used with AQUASOL AGRO:
• Recycled or reclaimed water, whose composition may vary depending on the prior treatment process.
• Saline waters, with salt concentrations that can interfere with the polymer’s behavior.
• Water with elevated or abnormal concentrations of plant-protection products.
• Water containing significant levels of fertilizers, metals, or other potentially phytotoxic substances.
In any of these situations, it is recommended to check the water quality and its compatibility with the crop beforehand, before using it together with the hydrogel.
A dual impact: crop and hydrogel
Inadequate water quality does not affect just one element of the cultivation system, but two at the same time. On the one hand, it can directly harm crop development, just as it would in conventional irrigation without hydrogel. On the other hand, it can alter the behavior of the polymer itself and reduce its absorption capacity, thereby compromising the benefit that its application is intended to provide.
This dual vulnerability underscores the importance of not taking the suitability of the available water for granted, especially on farms that depend on sources other than mains water or a regulated well.
What to do before applying AQUASOL AGRO
If your farm uses recycled, saline, or water of uncertain origin, the recommended preliminary step is to conduct a water-quality analysis to determine its exact composition: salt content, presence of plant-protection products, concentration of fertilizers and metals, among other relevant parameters.
This analysis makes it possible to anticipate potential incompatibilities, both with the crop and with the hydrogel, and to make informed decisions before beginning application, thus avoiding unexpected results or loss of effectiveness.
A clear recommendation
AQUASOL AGRO does not recommend using contaminated water or water unsuitable for agricultural use. This recommendation is not based on a generic precaution, but on the very nature of the product: a hydrogel that interacts with soil water can only deliver its full potential when that water meets the appropriate conditions.
Ensuring the quality of irrigation water is therefore a prerequisite for making the most of the water-retention benefits offered by AQUASOL AGRO.
