Why adding more hydrogel can harm your crop?
The intuition says more polymer means more water retained and better results. The agronomic reality is quite the opposite: exceeding the correct dose can suffocate the roots instead of protecting them.
It seems like common sense: if a little hydrogel helps retain water, a larger dose should retain even more, thus better protecting the crop from lack of irrigation.
This intuition is exactly what leads many farmers to apply more than recommended, thinking this will maximize results. However, the relationship between dose and benefit is not linear, and beyond a certain point it reverses.
Beyond the appropriate dose, the hydrated polymer takes up too much space in the soil, reduces its porosity, and can limit the oxygen available to the roots, exactly the opposite of what is intended when applying it.
What really happens in the soil with excess hydrogel
When the polymer hydrates, its volume increases significantly, several times its dry size. At the correct dose, this gel is distributed in small points within the soil structure, leaving enough space for air and root development.
When the dose is excessive, those gel points multiply and come closer together until they occupy too large a proportion of the total soil volume. The result is a more compact structure, with less air space, where roots can suffer from low oxygen conditions.
A root that breathes poorly does not absorb water or nutrients well, no matter how hydrated the surrounding gel is. The crop may then show symptoms that seem like drought, when in reality the problem is quite the opposite: product excess.
This explains why some farmers, upon seeing a crop in poor condition after applying hydrogel, mistakenly conclude they need to apply even more product the following season.
Why technical sheets specify a concrete dose
It is no coincidence that agricultural hydrogel technical sheets specify concrete amounts, such as a mixing ratio with the substrate or an amount per hectare depending on the crop type. That dose is not a minimum guideline that can be exceeded without risk: it is the result of finding the point where water retention improves without compromising soil structure.
The correct dose also depends on the soil type. Sandy soil, with low natural retention capacity, usually allows a higher dose than clay soil, which naturally retains water and has less margin before saturation.
How to find the right dose for your crop
The first step is always to start from the product's specific recommendation, not a generic figure found in another context. The hydrogel's granulometry, soil type, and plant development stage determine the optimal amount in each case.
When in doubt, it is better to stay at the lower end of the recommended range and observe the crop's behavior, rather than applying a high dose from the start thinking it will maximize results. Hydrogel works best as a precise complement to the irrigation system, not as a total substitute where more use means better performance.
